The other day I jammed on a drum, and it made me realize that percussions, of all instruments, have a lot to do with writing. When writing a book, we use tens of thousands of words and phrases. But some things don’t change. The pace and the rhythm stay fairly consistent. Like a song played by a live band, your writing should have a rhythmic unity, that is, a cohesion in how the sentences and paragraphs feel. Is it a fast read? A short read? How should we feel?
