Some writers don’t know their topic well enough, and some writers know their topic too well. You want to avoid lacking depth and substance, but you also want to avoid assuming too much knowledge from your readers. It is your job, not theirs, to know everything about the topic and to be able to synthesize, analyze, and summarize information. You are the leaders, they are the followers. It is not your readers’ job to know everything; it is yours.
